English Language Arts with Artificial Intelligence (Using AI for Character Analysis in English Language Arts)
Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science can be used to explore literature and communication in ELA classes. Finding patterns and meaning in text is an essential component of understanding the meaning behind what we read, hear and observe. By using natural language processing, we can analyse sentiment and story arcs, look at how characters interact, investigate changes in language over time, automate readability checking, and foster inquiry and critical thinking skills based on data from texts. We'll also talk about the growing trend in machine-generated text, including how you and your students can do this, as well as some potential issues and ethical considerations.

What exactly is "post-secondary planning" anyways? *PRE-RECORDED*
Career planning is an evolving phenomenon with the modern day career plan being non linear. Youth are preparing today for jobs in the future that may or may not even exist yet! We will debunk a common myth that "post-secondary" is equivalent to only university degrees! Trades apprenticeship, certificates, diplomas, degrees and non-credit course work can all increase one's earning potential throughout a lifetime. Jill Halter (Career Advisor at Notre Dame High School) and Cindy Visser (Career Advisor at Lindsay Thurber High School) will jointly context key elements of "post-secondary planning" and provide strategies to help support students in these efforts. The session will include: important considerations in both middle school and high school, a personal values assessment, and a request for feedback for possible future sessions. Whether you are a parent or guardian, an aunt or an uncle, a teacher or a counsellor, this session will give you tools to help youth start the life-long endeavour of non linear career planning, with a focus on "post-secondary" training.

The Importance of Ethics in Data Science: How Students and Teachers can Learn the Importance of Being Human Through Computational Thinking *PRE-RECORDED*
Make mistakes, accept failure, persevere, collaborate, empathize and consider someone else’s perspective! K-12 students are encouraged to be human in their everyday learning environments. However, integrating learning design to develop these learning outcomes is a lot harder to do. Open data science and open source programming is premised on the idea of a shared learning commons, where people intentionally share information so others can build new knowledge and expand learning beyond isolated computer files, research labs or classroom walls. This presentation will focus on how open data and being part of the open source community amplifies human-centered learning by bridging technology human interactions. Considering ethical perspectives in data science, computational thinking strategies will be used as a framework to guide human-centered critical thinking.

Humane Education: Creating a Caring Classroom
The concept of humane education has been around for over 100 years, but what is it exactly and how does it fit in the current classroom? In this session we will discuss what humane education is, and how it aligns with the Alberta Programs of Study. We will look at the benefits (to both students and animals) of including humane education into teaching and offer ideas and examples of how it can be done, while meeting curricular objectives. Finally, we will explore the free resources the Alberta SPCA education department has to offer.

In this session we will discuss:
• What humane education is (and what it isn’t) and how it fits into the current classroom
• How including humane education in teaching can foster positive character traits, such as compassion, respect, and kindness in students
• Ideas and examples of incorporating humane education into your classroom while meeting curriculum objectives
• Resources available to teachers including a free book lending program that helps build literacy while promoting empathy, character education themes, and information on animals in the classroom including classroom pets and animals in science, and more!

Why is this session relevant to Teachers:
• Incorporating humane education into the classroom is relevant to teachers as it fosters positive character traits in students to help them grow and further develop into contributing members of the community
• Key take always include: discussion of what humane education is and the benefits of including it in teaching, how it can be incorporated into lesson plans while meeting curricular objectives of different subjects, examine the variety of humane education resources available for teachers
