Looking Ahead - By Retired Teachers, for Retiring Teachers
THIS SESSION WILL NOT BE RECORDED.
This one-hour presentation is designed for those who are considering retirement within 5 years, or who are almost 65 years old. The realities of retirement are shared by a retiree, along with considerations for a life that is not governed by the bell. The Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association (ARTA) is introduced – what ARTA provides and the benefits of becoming a member.
While the presentation also briefly touches on retirement income considerations and your pension, this presentation is not focused on your pension. Pension questions should be directed to the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund (ATRF).
The balance of this presentation is focused on the Retiree Benefits Plan offered by ARTA – the health, dental, and travel options; and how the plan is managed.

True Story? Teachers in Film, TV, and Online *PRE-RECORDED*
This talk presents a dynamic array of teacher images to explain how they affect the teacher identities of mid-career and pre-service teachers, as well as student expectations and levels of public support. We see what is inspiring, worrisome, funny, and professionally useful about different types of teacher characters and look at ways of co-opting teacher images to advocate for classrooms.

Multiple Intelligences and the EQ – old trend, viewed from a contemporary perspective
The idea of multiple intelligences introduced by Howard Gardner in the 1970s has revolutionised the teaching world but also brought forward a lot of unanswered questions: how DO you adapt your teaching to the different learning styles present in your classroom?

While the answer is not easy to find, through soul searching, mindfulness and open-mindedness, and using a variety of communication strategies, Maria will introduce you to ways to nurture multiple intelligences while still catering to the needs of the learners as a group. Together, you will identify steps in the developmental phase of an individual, starting with early childhood, elementary years moving into young adult life, that can be used in planning and achieve the set goals.

At anytime you would like to communicate with Maria, you can at the following email:mdmillar@telus.net

Myths and Misconceptions in Science
The idea that scientific theories are less certain than laws is a common misconception about science. Or that you need a force to keep something moving. Or that global warming is the result of a hole in the ozone layer. Misconceptions are common, pervasive and exist for many different reasons. Challenging and addressing persistent misconceptions can be one of the most challenging aspects of science education.

In this session Kerry and Ian will provide examples of common misconceptions as well as provide techniques to help students along the road to scientific understanding.
