In this session, we will watch Common Strength, a 23-minute documentary which follows Lucy, a farmer from Kenya, who welcomes Colleen, a farmer from Canada, to her home for a week. The film touches on a variety of topics that are found in curriculum of many subjects and grade levels. After the film, we will present and discuss the accompanying Student Viewing Guide which is appropriate for classroom or home-based learning for students in grades 6 – 12. This guide proposes various discussion and research questions related to 5 themes: women’s leadership & empowerment, agriculture, sustainability, citizen & community participation, and global cooperation. The guide also includes extension activities for math and cooking. The documentary and guide are a free resource online produced by Canadian Food grains Bank.
