God doesn't play fair in the way He deals with us. You can look at the scriptural evidence - why is David forgiven for adultery and murder while Saul is not for much lesser crimes? And that says nothing of poor Job who suffered so much through no fault of his own. We can look at our own lives, too, and feel like God hasn't given us a fair deal. The question of how God treats us - unfairly and with indifference - is not a new one. In the last century, C.S. Lewis wrote "The Problem of Pain" and Phillip Yancey wrote "Where is God When it Hurts?" specifically in answer to this problem. It's an unanswered question in many classrooms for both our students and some of our colleagues.
